Flying with Bowling Balls: Tips for Bowling Air Travel

By Joseph (BBT Writing Staff) Leave a Comment

If you’re a bowling lover like me, your ball might be one of your most treasured possessions. It’s natural to want to bring it with you on trips where you may have the opportunity to try out some new bowling alleys. But when those destinations are a flight away, the calculus gets a bit more difficult when your heavy ball isn’t the easiest of additions to your carry-on luggage.

But what rules are there for bringing bowling balls onto an airplane? And how can you best ensure your balls get to your destination with you successfully?

First of all, there aren’t any official rules that restrict your ability to bring a ball. According to the TSA, you can bring bowling balls in carry-on bags onto the plane. (They do not qualify as a “bludgeon” like “bats or clubs,” which need to be put into a carry-on.)

But ultimately it is up to the discretion of the actual TSA agent who checks you in, so you’ll need to be careful.

You want to check the regulations of the specific airline you’ll be flying, as they can vary in ways that will affect you. For example, there may be a weight limit for your bags, additional fees, or other nuances.

What if you want to travel with multiple bowling balls?

If your trusty spare ball needs to come too, or if you’re an advanced tournament bowler sporting a large arsenal, you may need another option.

One option, frequently used by many advanced bowlers, is to ship your balls to your destination and schedule the delivery for a convenient time after you’ve arrived.

Bowling Ball Express is the recommended shipping service used by the USBC, which promises “reasonable rates” and gives this introduction: “With many airlines charging fees for extra bags, more bowlers are choosing Bowling Ball Express to ship their bowling equipment. With Bowling Ball Express, bowlers no longer have to worry about their equipment while they’re traveling” Read more about this shipping option here

Recommendations on Bowling Ball Travel Bags

There are a variety of options for actual bags in which to transport your balls. Depending on what you already have, you may just be able to bring your regular bowling bag. In addition, there are a variety of travel totes that make traveling with your balls even easier. Here are a few to look into
